#ResponsibleAdventures

The Big Island of Hawai’i is one of the most breathtaking destinations in the world, renowned for its active volcanoes, black sand beaches, and unparalleled natural beauty. Yet, with this beauty comes the responsibility to preserve and protect it for generations to come. At Responsible Adventures, we’re committed to promoting sustainable travel practices and responsible tourism that enables travelers to experience the natural beauty of Hawai’i while minimizing their environmental footprint.

One of the most effective ways travelers can participate in sustainable travel practices is by composting and recycling during their trip to the Big Island. By reducing waste and minimizing the impact of our travels on this beautiful island, we can help ensure its natural resources remain intact for future generations.

That’s why we’re launching our #ResponsibleAdventures campaign, inviting all travelers to share a photo of themselves composting or recycling on their trip to the Big Island. We’ve partnered with local organizations, including Zero Waste Hawai’i Island, to spotlight the importance of such efforts, and to celebrate the progress they are making towards a cleaner, healthier island.

Here’s what you need to know to participate in the #ResponsibleAdventures campaign:

  1. Composting and Recycling Basics

Let’s start with the basics: what is composting and recycling, and how can you get involved?

Composting is the process of breaking down organic matter, like food or yard waste, into nutrient-rich hummus that can be used as a natural fertilizer. By composting instead of throwing organic waste in the trash, you can significantly reduce the amount of waste that goes into landfills, where it produces greenhouse gases and contributes to climate change.

Recycling, on the other hand, is the process of turning used materials into new products, instead of disposing of them as waste. Recycling reduces the amount of waste that ends up in landfills, conserves natural resources like timber and water, and helps reduce the carbon emissions that come from the production of new materials.

  1. Share Your #ResponsibleAdventures Photo

Our #ResponsibleAdventures campaign is simple: take a photo of yourself composting or recycling on your trip to the Big Island, and share it on social media with the hashtag #ResponsibleAdventures. Tag us on Facebook Travel For Change: Explore & Empower Big Island Hawaii so we can see your post and celebrate your commitment to sustainable travel practices.

Weekly Community Company Spotlight

As part of our #ResponsibleAdventures campaign, we’re launching a weekly feature called the “Community Company Spotlight”. Each week we’ll showcase a local organization or business that is making a difference in the community, and contributing to sustainable tourism on the Big Island. This week, we’re proud to feature Zero Waste Hawai’i Island.

Zero Waste Hawai’i Island is a grassroots movement that aims to reduce waste and promote sustainability on the Big Island. They provide education, resources, and support to individuals and organizations on the island who want to reduce their environmental impact. They also offer a variety of programs, including composting workshops, zero waste cooking classes, and community clean-up events.

Through the work of Zero Waste Hawai’i Island and other local organizations, the Big Island is making strides towards a more sustainable future. By supporting community efforts like these, travelers can make a real impact and contribute to a healthier planet.

To get started with composting and recycling on your trip to the Big Island, take a look at your accommodation’s recycling bins and see what options are available. Ask if there is a composting program in place, and if not, consider bringing a small compost bin with you to store your food scraps. Check out Zero Waste Hawai’i Island’s website (http://www.zerowastehawaiiisland.com/) for more tips and resources on how to reduce waste and get involved in the local community.

Sustainable Travel Tips

Composting and recycling are just two of the many ways travelers can participate in sustainable travel practices on the Big Island. Here are a few more tips to help reduce your environmental footprint while still enjoying the natural beauty of the island:

  • Use a reusable water bottle instead of single-use plastic bottles
  • Bring your own reusable bags for shopping and errands
  • Choose eco-friendly accommodations that prioritize sustainable practices
  • Support local farmers and businesses by purchasing locally-sourced products
  • Use public transportation or rent a bike instead of driving a car.

By making intentional choices and being mindful of our impact on the environment, we can all do our part to promote sustainable tourism and preserve the natural beauty of the Big Island of Hawai’i.

Traveling to the Big Island of Hawai’i is a privilege, and one that comes with the responsibility to protect and preserve its natural beauty for future generations. As travelers, we have the power to make a difference through sustainable travel practices like composting and recycling.

By participating in our #ResponsibleAdventures campaign, and sharing a photo of yourself composting or recycling on your trip to the Big Island, you’re committing to making positive change and supporting sustainable tourism. And by spotlighting community organizations like Zero Waste Hawai’i Island, we can all come together to make an impact and promote a more sustainable future for the Big Island and beyond.
